Do You Need to Be a Native Speaker to Get IELTS Band 9?

Many learners believe IELTS Band 9 is only possible for native English speakers. Here is why that is a myth.

A common belief among students, and even some teachers, is that only native English speakers can achieve the highest IELTS score. That is not true.

Native speakers do not automatically receive a high band score. IELTS assesses how effectively a candidate completes specific tasks under exam conditions, so attention, structure and accuracy matter alongside language ability.

Strong preparation combines English proficiency with a clear understanding of the test format, assessment criteria and time limits. Regular practice and detailed feedback are more useful than relying on natural fluency alone.

Band 9 is exceptionally demanding, but it is not reserved for native speakers. A realistic plan, precise practice and consistent work can help any qualified candidate move toward a higher score.
